Pennsylvania Hospital's "Flowers to Pharmacy" Exhibition Featured on WHYY Public Radio and TV
January 20, 2012: Pennsylvania Hospital's "Flowers to Pharmacy" exhibition in the historic Pine Building was featured on WHYY-Radio and will be featured on WHYY-TV's Friday Arts, on Feb. 3, 2012 at 8:30 pm. Friday Arts is a 30-minute monthly arts, culture and entertainment magazine.
At the exhibit, on display until June 1, 2012, learn about medicine from the eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, see an inventory of the Pennsylvania Hospital Apothecary, and view original recipes written by medical students. While herbs are now used to introduce bursts of flavor into any dish, they were once known for their wide range of medicinal purposes.
The WHYY-TV Friday Arts Art of Food segment explores the exhibition in the hospital's historic Pine Building. The hospital is home to the Physic Garden which was designed to showcase common plants used by early physicians as treatment. The show will also visit the hospital's Historic Library & Portrait Gallery which features an exquisite collection of botanicals reference books from as early as the 18th century. As part of the exhibition's lecture series, the show will hear from the hospital's executive chef, who aims to elevate hospital food to a higher standard of taste and health, in addition to a class by herbalist Maia Toll about the role of herbs in medicine today.
First Hospital Foundation has supported the preservation of the hospital's historic artifacts and memorial collections since 1999.
